I’m raising money in support of Bladder Cancer Canada by participating in Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer.

Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer is a national walk, with participants from across Canada uniting to increase awareness and raise funds to support Bladder Cancer Canada.

Bladder cancer is one of the most expensive cancers to treat, with a high recurrence rate it receives very little research funding. This year, another 13,300 Canadians will be diagnosed, adding to the 80,000+ survivors.

In 2021 my mom, Patty, became one of those survivors. As I'm sure it is with anyone when they hear a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, I fell apart. Covid was still going strong and the family was terrified that she would have to wait a long time before receiving her surgery to remove the cancerous tumors from her bladder. Luckily, she did not have to wait long for her surgery. She was cancer free for two years; however, in 2023, during a routine checkup, the cancer was back and she went for her second surgery to remove the tumors. Another reoccurence and surgery occured soon after, followed by her first targeted chemotherapy treatment. Less than a year later, the cancer was back once again and this time, there were more tumors than ever before. A few weeks ago she went for her 4th surgery and will soon begin her second targeted chemotherapy treatment. Though she is lucky that her tumors are so far not aggressive and remain localized to the bladder, the reoccurence rate of this cancer makes this a very stressful and difficult battle.
